Online English Tutor for Sri Lankan Students (High School Volunteer Opportunity)
12-60 hours

SpeakUp SL is an initiative that connects Sri Lankan students aged 7+ with high school English tutors from Canada and other English-speaking countries. Our goal is to help students improve their spoken English fluency, confidence, and communication skills through fun, interactive online lessons. Unlike traditional English classes, our program focuses primarily on conversation and speaking rather than grammar and writing, although those may be incorporated when appropriate. Lessons are taught in small groups over Google Meet, creating a supportive environment where students can practice speaking without fear of making mistakes. Our program runs on a semester basis, and tutors who wish to continue volunteering in future semesters do not need to reapply. Lesson Length: 50 minutes Volunteers may choose to teach for as many class periods as they are available during the time window. As an online English tutor, you will: Lead engaging 50-minute Zoom lessons with small groups of Sri Lankan students. Help students improve their spoken English through conversation, games, activities, and discussions. Create a welcoming and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable speaking English. Support students in building confidence and communication skills rather than focusing primarily on grammar or writing. Use lesson materials and translation tools when needed to help students understand concepts. Attend one mandatory online training session before the semester begins. Commit to teaching throughout the semester to provide students with a consistent learning experience. No knowledge of any Sri Lankan languages is required. Students already have a basic understanding of English, and tutors may use translations and provided resources when needed. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Selected applicants will be invited to an interview approximately one week after submitting their application. Application Deadline: August 30 Contact: lkspeakup@gmail.com Instagram: speakupsl https://www.instagram.com/speakupsl?igsh=MXJiOXYyNHJ6bXF6OQ%3D%3D Our website is currently developing and will be published soon!
