Food donation pick up and drop off (Strathcona) - Friday afternoons
The DTES Neighbourhood House is looking for a volunteer to support our Nutritional Outreach programs by picking up some food donations from Strathcona Community Centre on Friday afternoons (sometime between 3pm-ish and 4:30pm), and deliver it to the DTES Neighbourhood House (DTESNH). This is an unpaid position and we are looking for someone to start asap. It would probably be easiest for someone with a vehicle to complete this task, however it is only a 7 minute walk in between the 2 destinations so a vehicle is not required as long as the person is alright with walking the donations over. If the volunteer does choose to walk, they can use our wagon. In that case 2 trips *may* be required--we aren't sure yet. Specifically, the volunteer will be communicating on a weekly basis via text on Friday afternoons between 2-4:30. - Pick up food donations from Strathcona Community Centre, and bring them to the DTESNH. - After bringing the food into the DTESNH, the volunteer must store and label the donations appropriately (we will show you how to do this) ASSETS We ideally seek volunteers who have the ability to apply creative problem solving, have some experience working with food or in kitchens, can go with the flow, and have strong communication skills. - lived/living experience in the DTES - work/volunteer experience in the DTES - other relevant experience to the role - ability to speak multiple languages - FoodSafe certification REQUIREMENTS We require a minimum 2 month commitment for this position. Volunteers will need to read and fill out our forms, and have a call with the Volunteer Coordinator before their position is confirmed. Other requirements include: - understanding and support of the DTES Neighbourhood House's mission and philosophies - ability to work respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences - openness to learning from and honouring community members - Must be able to lift up to 40lbs - ability to work as a team and help each other - review select parts of our Volunteer Handbook before the first shift APPLYING: If you are interested please send us an email at volunteer@dtesnhouse.ca.
