Volunteers Needed to Sit Vigil with Hospice Patients

Ongoing
Autumn Hospice is looking for volunteers to sit vigil by the bedside of patients in the final stages of life.

“Vigil volunteers” offer companionship, comfort, and presence to patients during the time immediately prior to their death. They might dim the lights, share quiet music, read, or simply sit and hold the patient’s hand.

Vigil volunteers work in shifts to be with patients when family members are unavailable, or when family members need a break, but want to make sure their loved ones are never alone when they are so close to death. Sometimes vigil volunteers are there for patients who have no family; for patients who don’t have loved ones by their side, a vigil can provide the kind of comfort that can only be offered by another human being.

Vigil volunteers must:
•	be age 18 or older
•	be comfortable around death
•	have strong communication skills, especially active listening
•	be able to maintain composure in emotional and stressful situations
•	be able to remain open and supportive and without judgment
•	be flexible and willing to be called on short notice
•	have a valid driver’s license, insurance coverage, and 24/7 access to a vehicle

Previous experience working or volunteering for hospice preferred but not required.

Schedule: On call/as needed

Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Volunteering with hospice doesn’t just benefit the patient and their caregivers; it also benefits the volunteer. Serving others is fulfilling work, as is the knowledge that you are positively impacting someone’s life. As volunteers build relationships with the patients and families they care for, they hear stories, meet new people, and create deep connections that help them better understand those in different situations from themselves.
