Grow Together Food Share

104 Tremaine Rd., Milton, ON, L9T 2W9 [map]
24-72 hours / weekly
-
Sustainable Milton’s “Growing Together Food Share” program will bring older adults (> 55 years) and youth (< 30 years) together to learn from one another, experience the health and social benefits of community gardening, grow nutritious food, have fun, enjoy the harvest and share the excess with local food share organizations.
The garden sessions will run from early June to late August, culminating with a “grand finale” celebration and harvest in early September.
The community garden is located at the Italian Cultural Centre of Milton (ICCM) at 104 Tremaine Road, just south of Kelso and at the foot of the escarpment.
The program is geared to seniors. Immigrant and newcomer seniors are most welcome, as are seniors with disabilities. There are accessible garden beds for those with mobility issues. Some funds are available for transportation and language interpretation. This project is funded by a New Horizons grant from the Government of Canada.
Each participant is invited to attend one four-week session, twice a week from 9:00 a.m. – noon. New blocks of sessions will be offered throughout the summer. Some groups will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, others on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Each group will have 10 seniors and 6 or 7 youth participants.
Participants will work at their own pace, according to their own abilities and interests. No gardening experience is required, but avid gardeners won’t be disappointed. Mid-morning, participants will mingle for light snacks and refreshments and learning, while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful view.
For more information, please email growfood@sustainablemilton.ca. Student volunteer hours are available.
