Read With Elementary Students in Grande Prairie (In-person literacy support)!
Looking to gain experience in tutoring children and youth? Want to give back to your community? Become a United for Literacy tutor! United for Literacy believes that everyone has the right to literacy and education in a positive and safe environment that focuses on meeting each learner's unique needs. OPPORTUNITY In Grande Prairie, United for Literacy has partnered with three local elementary schools to offer 1-to-1 literacy support to students. As a volunteer, you will work with elementary aged learners (age 7-12) and create a fun environment that is focused on building positive memories and experiences around learning and reading. You will work one on one with your learner to play games, do literacy activities, read, write and build their confidence! COMMITMENT We'd love to have you on the team for a minimum of three months, but availability throughout the school year (October until early-June) is ideal. Volunteer recruitment occurs in September (October start) and January. The minimum time commitment is 1 hour/week, split into two half-hour sessions between the hours of 9 am - 3 pm Monday-Thursday. Scheduling is flexible and based on the availability of the learner and tutor. Reference letters are available to volunteers who have been with us for at least 6 months. LOCATION Choose to volunteer at one of our three locations: St. Clement Catholic School, Mother Theresa Catholic School, or St. Patrick Catholic School. APPLICANTS No teaching experience? No problem! Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds and experiences. We are looking for punctual, enthusiastic, and flexible people who are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of Indigenous children and youth. Previous experience working with children and career pursuits in the field of education will be considered assets but are not required. Recruitment and training: Our applicant screening process involves an application, an interview, two reference checks, and a police records check (United for Literacy will cover the cost). A 3 hour training and shadowing is provided before the first tutoring session. If you would like to apply, please fill out our inquiry form: https://www.unitedforliteracy.ca/volunteer
