ABOUT US The Aquatic Biosphere Society of Canada is seeking individuals with a keen interest in being a creative, positive force in in that growth. Join us in the advancement and reach of our award-winning program portfolio: - Developing a legacy eco-attraction in Edmonton that presents the “Story of Water” to visitors, via a public conservation aquarium, educational centre and a conservation & research facility. - Directing impactful programs like lake bottom and shoreline cleanups; - Production of the award winning “Water We Doing?” podcast and other educational media; - The Minnow mobile interactive attraction, featuring interactive displays. The Aquatic Biosphere Society of Canada is a registered charity, founded in 2014. The Mission of the Aquatic Biosphere Society of Canada is: 'To educate, inspire and empower people to play an active role in the conservation of our aquatic ecosystems.' THE COMMITMENT We are seeking individuals to help us move the Board into a governance and strategic planning structure from the current working board of a start-up. As a governance board, meetings would be held four times per year. In this transition phase expect up to 6 meetings until the transition is complete. Meetings are held online, team oriented project management software is used to track projects and progress. All Board members will receive orientation and training on the software tools and will be expected to have read any materials distributed prior to the meetings. As an organisation rooted in biodiversity; Candidates are welcome from across Canada as we operate the board within a virtual/digital structure. Time Commitment: - Meetings held quarterly, remote, evenings; - Program and project meetings held ad-hoc as needed. QUALIFICATIONS We value candidates who are open to joining a transitional board, are respectful of diverse contributions and skills, collaborative, and passionate about the mission. An enjoyment of, or at least a high tolerance of exceptional fish jokes, and a commitment to community building should be a consideration when applying. Required attributes include: • Clear understanding of non-profit governance; • Analytical thinking and ability to make substantive contributions to the strategic plan; • Visionary approach and ability to see the organization in broad terms; • Ability to work on diverse teams and communicate effectively; • Strong written communication skills for grant writing and policy development and review; • Fundraising or capital campaign experience an asset • Willingness to network and make connections on behalf of the Society; • Comfortable with working virtually, experience with project management software, online communications such as Slack or Discord. • Effective communication skills; English fluency in speaking and writing is required; • Long-term (minimum one year) commitment. Additional Requirements: • Fundraising experience (3 years); • Familiarity with Google and MS365 ecosystems, • Program design, and • Managing volunteers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Director of Volunteer Resources (Open until filled): • Share your love of conservation. Engauge with volunteers, recruit exciting new people, help provide staff resources for exciting programs. Additional Requirements: • Volunteer recruitment and retention experience in a non profit setting; • Familiarity with Google and MS365 ecosystems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Director of Education (Open until filled): • Education services are one of the most requested functions of the Society. Help develop exciting and innovative education programs that contribute to our award-winning portfolio. Additional Requirements: • Experienced educator, new or recent graduates welcome. • Experience with Alberta k-12 curricula and lesson planning. • Familiarity with Google and MS365 ecosystems.
