Magic of Christmas, The
In 1983, Bob Johnson founded The Magic of Christmas with one simple but powerful belief: Christmas should be about more than gifts—it’s about hope, love, and community. He saw too many Calgarians in despair during the holidays and dreamed of delivering joy right to their doorsteps.
Every Christmas Eve, this dream comes alive in a way that truly feels like magic. Calgary Transit buses are transformed into “reindeer buses,” stuffed with hundreds of carefully selected gifts. Volunteers dressed as Santa and elves board these buses to deliver not just packages, but human connection, laughter, and the comforting reminder that no one is forgotten.
But The Magic of Christmas is more than a delivery service. It’s a living, breathing story Calgary tells itself about who we are as a city: caring, resilient, united. It’s neighbours helping neighbours. It’s a chance for volunteers to step into the role of storyteller, to be the face of hope, the reason someone believes again in the good in the world.

Our volunteers don’t just hand out gifts—they create moments that people remember for a lifetime. They knock on doors where hope is running low, bring smiles to seniors who feel forgotten, and fill homes with the sound of laughter and Christmas carols. They embody the spirit of Calgary Strong—showing that even in tough times, our community rallies around those who need it most.

Our Vision:
Every year, many Calgary families face hardships that make it hard to find the joy of the season. Seniors and those in continuing care can feel especially isolated during the holidays. Whatever the reasons, we know everyone can benefit from a magical visit from Santa and the elves.
