Youth Justice Committee volunteers help young people move through and past a minor offence by holding them accountable without holding them back. As a Youth Justice Committee volunteer you will: *Impact a young person’s life by empowering them to have a voice; increase their accountability; develop self-awareness, all with the goal of avoiding a formal youth record and developing positive relationships with adults in the community. *Help families by considering their needs as well, providing additional resources to address family difficulties and ensuring cases are handled expediently and efficiently. *Support victims by providing an opportunity to express how the crime has affected them and offer restitution, if applicable, to help repair the harm that was caused. *Improve the community by having a positive impact on reducing youth crime. Your Commitment: *Be a Youth Justice Committee (YJC) Member for a minimum one year *Attend initial and ongoing training *Attend “panels”, a meeting where the young person and their family with the YJC Members (approximately 5-10 hours/month) *Attend Committee Member meetings including Annual General Meeting (approximately 1-2 hours per year) *Be flexible, open minded and willing to learn Minimum age to volunteer is 25.
