Altview Foundation
We are a charity serving queer and transgender youth and children in the Sherwood Park area, and provide outreach services to rural communities across the province. Last year we were able to serve nearly 2,500 clients, half of whom were at risk for violent or sexual abuse, serious thoughts of suicide, or addictions and mental illness.
If you are interested in volunteering your time with us, we have several board positions available. Please reach out to board@altview.ca. We would love to hear from university students looking for hands-on experience, or long-time professionals seeking a way to give back to their community. As long as you have access to internet, you can be part of our board from anywhere in the province. The more people willing to help, the better.
Our organization’s focus is on education and support for parents and teachers to understand the experiences of 2SLGBTQ children and youth. We also help provide hate-free and queer-positive social spaces for kids to explore and celebrate their identities. This includes direct peer support for youths, as well as programs through partners like Reach Out Speak Out in Strathcona County, that help reduce rates of family violence.
We deliver workshops and presentations on allyship, creating support networks for vulnerable youth and how to provide the information youth need to access critical resources. Our mandate is to help 2SLGBTQ youth live safely and thrive at home, where close contact with family and community will help foster empathy, understanding, acceptance and celebration.
We are an inclusive organization and aim to reflect on our board the wide diversity of 2SLGBTQ people and allies living in Alberta who we may serve and work with. All our board members abide by a professional code of conduct and are members of multiple minority communities that inform our perspectives and how we function as a board.
As a board we decide strategic direction for the organization, oversee yearly financials, manage and update policy documents, and network in the community. More recently we have taken on responsibility for upgrading our website and shifting to become more fundraising oriented. We would be very excited to hear from anyone with skills and experience in graphic design, managing a Wordpress website, social media content, setting up email lists, and other marketing-related activities. We would also be very pleased to have someone join us who has a background in admin, fundraising, or finances.
Professional development and training is an important part of being an altView board member, and we are very happy to explore options to train members in areas of interest that will help to achieve board goals, and which might also benefit a board member’s professional résumé.
Again, please reach out if you want to help make a positive difference for 2SLGBTQ youth in Alberta. Simply email board@altview.ca introducing yourself and explaining why you want to help out.
Sincerely,
Elise Johnston altView Board President
