Coffee Program Volunteer
The Coffee House is a program located in various social housing buildings and single-room occupancy hotels in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), providing a space for residents to enjoy coffee and snacks while building social connections with their neighbours. With the increasing gentrification of the DTES it drives the displacement of community resources, highlighting the importance of fostering community resilience and autonomy. Therefore, by offering a low-barrier program, it takes isolated seniors out of their rooms and into a welcoming space, providing them a sense of community. The coffee program volunteer works alongside either a senior volunteer or the program manager to set up and disassemble the Coffee House every week. Volunteer duties include: - Putting out snacks and pantry items - Making coffee - Facilitating a warm and welcoming environment - Engaging with the seniors who show up! - At times, we may also include activities during the coffee sessions, such as stretching, arts and crafts, etc... Volunteer Qualifications: - Comfortable interacting with seniors and members of the DTES - Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Compassionate, patient, and reliable - Commit to attending each week for at least 2 months - 18 years of age or older - A cleared criminal record check (VSMS will cover any cost) Assets: - Lived or living experience in the DTES, or volunteer/work experience - Able to speak multiple languages - First Aid Certification How to Apply: Email your resume to anitas@vsms.ca to apply or if you have any questions!
