Event Volunteer - Heritage Discovery Day

Vancouver, BC [map]
5-5 hours
Are you interested in Vancouver’s unique heritage properties and looking for an opportunity to peek inside?

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our site teams and assist in delivering a highly popular event that explores Vancouver’s beautiful heritage houses and buildings. Heritage Discovery Day is a 1-day, self-guided tour organized every year since 2003 by Vancouver Heritage Foundation. This year we are engaging Vancouver’s unique neighbourhood of Kitsilano where 9 heritage sites will be available to explore.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation advances the appreciation and conservation of our city’s diverse heritage places and their stories. We raise awareness of the vital contribution that heritage makes to a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community. Through our events, like Heritage Discovery Day, we create opportunities for current and new Vancouverites to learn about the place they live. We aim to reach beyond built heritage to center the diverse history and cultural heritage of Vancouver and inspire the next generation of heritage lovers.

Event Location: Kitsilano, multiple locations
Event Date: Saturday, June 7th
Time commitment: 4.5 hour shift + 1 hour training session.

You will be part of one of our Site Teams, which are comprised of up to 12 volunteers directed by a Team Lead volunteer. Teams assist with the set-up and/or clean up of the site, direct ticket holders through the site, enforce tour guidelines, answer questions, and maintain safety/security of the site. Volunteers will remain in one location for the duration of their shift as the tour is "self-guided."

Support: Volunteers report to the Volunteer Manager and will be supported on event day by VHF staff members. Questions can be directed to caroline@vancouverheritagefoundation.org.

What we are looking for:

- Positive and friendly attitude with great inter-personal skills and eager to connect with diverse audiences
- Able to take direction and manage tasks independently
- Willing and comfortable enforcing rules to the public
- Knowledge about heritage, architecture or history is not necessary, but  very welcome

If you are a new volunteer with our organization, we also like to have a quick introductory chat to make sure we are a good fit!

- Be a part of a thriving community committed to the conservation of Vancouver’s heritage places
