Communication Facilitator - Aphasia Program

2-2 hours / weekly
On-going - one year minimum commitment
The Stroke Association of BC (SRABC), doing business as After Stroke BC, provides services, education and advocacy to those affected by stroke, throughout every stage of recovery. The Communication Facilitator for the Aphasia Peer Connect group facilitates online discussions and conversations between participants by applying virtual supportive communication strategies. Volunteers work in collaboration with program leads and fellow volunteers.

Responsibilities
•	Participate in the Aphasia Peer Connect virtual group on a weekly basis.
•	Assist staff member by welcoming clients and co-hosting large-group discussions.
•	Using a variety of supportive communication strategies for people with aphasia in a virtual setting, independently facilitate and encourage enjoyable social conversations between clients in break-out sessions.
•	Enable clients to take part in social conversations by being observant of those needing more communication support.
•	Participate in pre/post session meetings as well as de-brief meetings.
•	Prepare and share resources for the group, as directed by staff.

Requirements
•	19 years of age or older
•	Pursuing Speech Language Pathology or healthcare related education
•	Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•	Comfortable using the features of a virtual meeting platform or willing to learn 
•	Access to a device with webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection
•	Ability to take and give verbal and/or written direction and follow through to complete assigned tasks
•	Ability to take initiative
•	Reliable, understanding, collaborative and respectful
•	Team-oriented, personable
•	Prior volunteer experience with individuals with aphasia or related acquired communication disorders an asset

Tuesday AM (9:45 to 11:15 am Pacific)
Tuesday PM (12:45 to 2:15 pm Pacific)
Wednesday AM (9:45 to 11:15 am Pacific)
Thursday PM (12:45 to 2:15 pm Pacific)
Friday PM (12:45 to 2:15 pm Pacific)*
*Please note: this group is for participants with more pronounced aphasia, so prior experience working with individuals with communication disabilities is a great asset.

There is flexibility to move between programs if your schedule requires every 4 months. We offer aphasia program Monday through Friday.
