3-4 hours / weekly
-
The DTES Neighbourhood House is looking for volunteers to support our Kids in Motion summer program with dance on Fridays. The volunteer shift will be from 3-6:30pm on Fridays from July 25-August 29th.

The grassroots, secular DTES Neighbourhood House (DTESNH) aims to provide a dignified welcoming space for our neighbours to participate in various community inspired programs, as well as leadership, social, and recreational opportunities.

Kids in Motion is a brand new program that the DTES Neighbourhood House is running this summer to replace our School’s Out programs which run throughout the school year. The program consists of 2 activities which are run on different days of the week—soccer and dance. Children attending the program will be registered with staff ahead of time, and will range from 6-12 years old. Snacks will be provided at all activities.

VOLUNTEER DUTIES:
Arrive at the DTESNH at the start of the shift and help staff with preparing and serving snacks before the dance class starts. A facilitator will come lead a kids dance class for 1 hour, exploring different forms of dance throughout the series. Assist staff, the facilitator, and the children during the class as needed (especially helping to keep the kids engaged). Help with cleanup, watching and/or entertaining/engaging with the kids after the class until their parents or caregivers pick them up. We would like volunteers taking on this role to commit to attending all dates or almost all dates if possible (outside of unplanned absences such as emergencies or illness).

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:

APPLY: Our application, screening and onboarding process includes:
1. Email volunteer@dtesnhouse.ca letting us know which position you are applying for, a bit about yourself, and why you want to volunteer.
2. Applicants will be sent volunteer forms to fill out
3. Once we have received your completed forms, we will send you an invitation to complete the vulnerable sector check online, and schedule a time to do the 45min screening call/phone interview. The call is to ensure that the role is a good fit for the volunteer, answer any questions, and if both parties agree to move forward with the placement, then we will also go over a condensed volunteer orientation.
4. After the phone call we will ask the volunteer to review some training materials before they come in for their first volunteer shift.

ABOUT THE DTES NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE:
Our mission is to provide opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with and contribute to their community in an equitable atmosphere of sharing and learning. The secular, grassroots Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTES NH) embraces people of all ancestries, genders, ages and descriptions; annually welcoming almost 9,000 DTES residents in a community where 70% of our neighbours have low‐incomes, 700 are homeless and 5,000 are under-housed.
Those who built the DTES NH put the Right to Food at the heart of our work, as nutritional vulnerability was a theme familiar to all. Our goal around the Right to Food is to reform the nutritional impact, quality, abundance and delivery of food in the DTES in consultation with residents, community food providers, non‐food community organizations, healthcare professionals, policy makers, growers/suppliers, food/beverage industry professionals and researchers. Learn more about our organization & programs at dtesnhouse.ca The DTES NH acknowledges and honours the fact that our community lies within the Unceded Territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
We are happy to provide our volunteers with references or letters of recommendation upon request after they have completed 20 volunteer hours at the DTESNH. Spend time outdoors this summer supporting children's physical education!
