Sunday Meal Outreach - Nutritional Outreach

The grassroots, secular DTES Neighbourhood House (DTESNH) aims to provide a dignified welcoming space for our neighbours to participate in various community inspired programs, as well as leadership, social, and recreational opportunities.  

We are looking for volunteers to assist us in providing meals to DTES community members on Sundays from 10am-2pm. Every week a team of volunteers cook a delicious and nutritious meal which they then distribute in the community. This is an unpaid position. 

DUTIES: 
- Assisting the Team Lead volunteer to cook and package the meals into containers. 
- 2 volunteers will walk together around the neighbourhood with the meals, handing them out. we sometimes go to specific locations to drop off food there.  
- Walk back to the NH with the wagon.   
- Help clean up the kitchen - please stay until 2pm. 

REQUIREMENTS: 
- comfortable walking through the DTES and engaging with residents 
- responsible, dependable, and punctual 
- good communication skills (responds to emails in a timely manner, easily reachable) 
- understanding and support of the DTES Neighbourhood House's mission and philosophies 
- able to commit to volunteering in this role for at least 2 months 
- must be comfortable volunteering without direct staff supervision. The Team Lead volunteers are very experienced and skilled to take leadership in handling a lot of different situations, should they occur. 
- able and willing to walk aprox 20min with a full wagon (16-20min walk), rain or shine (accommodations can be made if this is not possible) 

ASSETS: 
- living or lived experience, or work or volunteer experience in the DTES 
- interest in food security 
- takes initiative, works well with others & independently 
- looking for a long-term volunteer role and to develop relationships with community members 
- food safe certification
