Cedar Cottage Community Garden

Our garden is located near Victoria Drive and Hull Street in east Vancouver, under the skytrain guideway. We offers a variety of micro-climates and growing conditions to gardeners of all ages and abilities.

In the last few years, our garden underwent some difficult times – the north side of the garden was destroyed by an adjacent construction project, and the south half of the garden is being demolished by another development. The garden will remain but confined to the area under skytrain that we lease from Translink.

Our goals are:
- to promote food security
- to provide space for growing in the city where green space is at a premium
- to create a sense of community and connections within the neighbourhood
- to create a safe, welcoming space for neighbours to gather and spend time
- to share knowledge about growing

In a city with increasing densification, people are finding it very difficult to access green space such as community gardens. We want to fully utilize the land we have, we are working to revitalize the north side of the garden to grow small trees, berry bushes and vegetables. However it is on a slope of varying steepness. We find ourselves limited in knowledge on how to properly build a garden here. Ideally we would like to see a terraced garden on this slope, which people of different physical ability could utilize and enjoy.
