Test Lead, Open Artificial Brain Life Support (ABLS) Project (Remote, Part Time or Full Time)

Time Commitment: Part-time or full-time volunteer commitment (20+ hours/week). Four-month minimum. Candidates able to contribute additional time may be considered for a full-time volunteer commitment.

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

About Right to Live Canada

Right to Live Canada is a virtual, founder-led Canadian non-profit building practical systems that help people continue living by creating pathways to better futures. Our work began in response to poverty-driven euthanasia among Canadians with disabilities and has expanded into developing technologies, services, and organizational infrastructure that support long-term continuity of life.

One of our newest initiatives is the Open Artificial Brain Life Support (Open ABLS) project—an open-source engineering effort focused on developing a non-clinical bench-top research platform. The project is intended solely for engineering research and education. It does not involve patient care, biological materials, or clinical testing. Instead, it uses pumps, sensors, software, artificial loads, water-based test fluids, and transparent fluid circuits to develop and validate engineering concepts through open collaboration.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a Test Lead to oversee the testing and validation strategy for the Open ABLS platform.

The Test Lead plays a critical role in ensuring that every new version of the system performs better than the previous one. Rather than relying on assumptions, every engineering decision is validated through structured testing, documented evidence, and repeatable experiments.

Working closely with the Build Lead, Hardware Lead, Electronics Lead, Software Lead, Fluid Loop Lead, Biomedical Engineer, and Scientific Advisor, you will develop standardized testing procedures, execute validation tests, analyze results, document failures, and recommend improvements before each project release.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys engineering validation, troubleshooting complex systems, quality assurance, and continuous improvement within an innovative open-source environment.

------ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
-- Develop repeatable testing procedures for hardware, electronics, software, and integrated systems.
-- Design validation protocols for pressure, flow, leak detection, alarms, sensors, emergency stop systems, and power interruption behaviour.
-- Execute system integration and functional testing.
Intentionally introduce failure scenarios to evaluate system resilience and reliability.
-- Record test results, maintain failure logs, and document corrective actions.
-- Compare hardware and software revisions to identify regressions and performance improvements.
-- Work with engineering leads to verify that design changes achieve intended objectives.
-- Analyze collected data and recommend improvements based on objective evidence.
-- Improve testing methodologies as the platform evolves.
-- Help establish quality assurance standards for future project releases.
-- Contribute to technical documentation, testing reports, and public project documentation.
-- Support the Open ABLS philosophy of Build → Test → Fail → Log → Revise → Release → Replicate → Accelerate.

------ QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
-- Experience testing engineering systems, software, electronics, laboratory -- equipment, or similar technical products.
-- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
-- Experience documenting technical results.
-- Ability to design structured test procedures.
-- Excellent attention to detail.
-- Comfortable working remotely.

Preferred:
-- Quality Assurance or Verification & Validation experience.
-- Laboratory testing experience.
-- Experience with automated testing.
-- Data analysis experience.
-- Startup prototype development.
-- Interest in open-source engineering.

This is a part-time or full-time volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion.
