Scientific Advisor - Open Artificial Brain Life Support (ABLS) Project (Remote, Part Time or Full Time)

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

About Right to Live Canada

Right to Live Canada is seeking a Scientific Advisor to support the Open Artificial Brain Life Support (Open ABLS) Project, an open-source, non-clinical engineering research initiative.

The project focuses on developing a transparent bench-scale platform using pumps, sensors, software, artificial loads, and safe test fluids for engineering validation. The Scientific Advisor will help ensure the project remains scientifically grounded by reviewing technical concepts, evaluating physiological assumptions, advising on research direction, and supporting accurate scientific communication.

Working with the Executive Director and multidisciplinary engineering team, the advisor will help distinguish validated engineering work from future research possibilities while maintaining scientific rigor and responsible development.

--- ROLE DESCRIPTION
- Review engineering concepts from a scientific and physiological perspective.
- Advise on neuroscience, physiology, perfusion, biomedical engineering, or related scientific principles.
Evaluate biological assumptions and identify scientific limitations or knowledge gaps.
- Help maintain a clear distinction between non-clinical engineering prototypes and future biological or clinical research.
Review technical documentation and public-facing materials for scientific accuracy and appropriate language.
- Provide guidance on terminology, research framing, and responsible scientific communication.
Collaborate with engineering leads to improve scientific understanding across the project.
- Assist in identifying variables, measurements, and research questions relevant to future investigation.
- Participate in technical discussions and multidisciplinary design reviews.
Support the organization's commitment to open-source engineering and transparent documentation.

--- QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Degree or equivalent experience in neuroscience, physiology, biomedical engineering, medicine, life sciences, bioengineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of biological and physiological systems.
Ability to critically evaluate scientific claims using evidence-based reasoning.
- Understanding of the differences between engineering prototypes, laboratory research, medical devices, and clinical applications.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent analytical thinking, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
Comfortable working independently in a remote, collaborative environment.

Preferred:
- Experience in neuroscience, neurophysiology, cerebral perfusion, organ preservation, perfusion science, critical care technology, biomedical research, or related disciplines.
- Experience advising engineering, research, or open-source technology projects.
- Experience reviewing scientific publications, research proposals, technical documentation, or engineering reports.
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, sensors, pumps, fluid systems, data acquisition, or prototype development.
- Understanding of research ethics, translational research, and regulatory considerations.
- Interest in open-source science, biomedical innovation, and multidisciplinary engineering.

This is a part-time or full-time volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion.
