OpenABLS Industrial Designer (Autodesk Fusion / 3D CAD) (Remote, Part-Time)

Organization: Right to Live Canada
Location: Remote (United States, Canada or Europe)
Time Commitment: Part-time volunteer commitment, minimum 20 hours per week, including meetings and all role work. Duration negotiable, four month minimum.

Right to Live Canada is an early-stage Canadian non-profit building Continuity—a service, financial, technological, and institutional framework designed to help people maintain access to preferable living futures.

OpenABLS is an open-source, non-clinical research and engineering project exploring artificial brain life support technologies.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION
The OpenABLS Industrial Designer will create accurate, reusable 3D CAD models for OpenABLS development stages, from the open workbench through the Integrated Development Prototype and eventual reference product.

The role will focus on exterior form, proportions, scale, configuration, and progressively develop internal layouts and assemblies as engineering decisions become available.

------ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
-- Create and maintain parametric parts and assemblies using Autodesk Fusion or comparable CAD software.
-- Translate engineering dimensions, sketches, references, and decisions into accurate 3D models.
-- Develop technical drawings, cutaways, exploded views, assemblies, and presentation-ready renders.
-- Maintain clean, reusable, version-controlled CAD files and model libraries.
-- Incorporate engineering feedback and coordinate files with the documentation team.
-- Develop concept models while clearly distinguishing them from validated engineering designs.
-- Avoid inventing unsupported components, dimensions, functions, or technical claims.

------ QUALIFICATIONS
Universal Requirements:
-- Good video and audio equipment for virtual meetings.
-- A quiet, dedicated environment where you can give virtual meetings your full attention.

Required:
-- Strong portfolio in industrial design, 3D CAD, product development, or complex hardware.
-- Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Fusion or comparable parametric CAD software.
-- Strong skills in form development, proportion, materials, finishes, and manufacturability.
-- Experience creating parametric parts, assemblies, component layouts, cutaways, and exploded views.
-- Ability to translate technical information into accurate 3D models.
-- Strong file organization, revision control, communication, and collaboration skills.
-- Ability to work independently with strong judgment and attention to detail.

Preferred:
-- Experience with biomedical, medical-device, laboratory, life-support, robotics, or complex hardware.
-- Experience with Blender, KeyShot, or similar rendering tools.
-- Mechanical design, product architecture, component packaging, or manufacturability experience.
-- Experience creating animations, motion studies, or technical visualizations.
-- Experience preparing models/renders for websites, presentations, videos, or open-source documentation.

------  TIME COMMITMENT
Minimum 20 hours per week, including meetings and all role work. Volunteers must have reliable video/audio equipment and a suitable environment for focused virtual meetings.

This role is suited to an industrial designer who combines strong visual design with engineering discipline, accuracy, and technical restraint.
