Hardware Lead, Open Artificial Brain Life Support (ABLS) Project (Remote, Part Time or Full Time)

Time Commitment: Part-time or full-time volunteer commitment (20+ hours/week). Duration negotiable, four-month minimum.

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

------ THE MISSION
Right to Live Canada exists to realize the right to live as a practical, supported, executable choice.
We were founded in response to systemic poverty-driven euthanasia amongst Canadians with disabilities: cases where Canadians choose MAiD because they cannot access the essentials required to continue living. This is a specific form of economic euthanasia: euthanasia where a preferable living future existed, but was not achieved.
That crisis remains our founding application point. It is not the boundary of our work.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION
This is a part-time or full-time, volunteer, and remote role for a Hardware Lead supporting the Open ABLS project.
The Hardware Lead owns the physical architecture of the machine. This includes the frame, mounts, enclosure, tubing layout, electronics bay, sensor rail, leak tray, cable routing, assembly sequence, and overall mechanical integration of the bench platform. 
Working closely with the Fluid Loop, Electronics, and Software Leads, the Hardware Lead transforms engineering requirements into a robust, buildable, and replicable physical system.
Responsibilities include mechanical design, CAD development, hardware integration, enclosure design, design-for-assembly, component selection, fabrication planning, version control of mechanical assemblies, and supporting public documentation.

------ QUALIFICATIONS
Universal Requirement:
-- You must possess good equipment for virtual meetings, both video and audio. 
-- You must attend virtual meetings with the capability to give it your full attention, like a dedicated office room or space. 

Required:
-- Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design, or equivalent experience.
-- Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, etc.).
-- Experience designing mechanical assemblies.
-- Knowledge of manufacturing methods.
-- Excellent problem-solving skills.

Preferred:
-- Rapid prototyping experience.
-- 3D printing and CNC experience.
-- Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
-- Open-source hardware development.
-- Biomedical device development experience

------ TIME COMMITMENT
This is a part-time or full-time volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion. The role is best suited to someone who is comfortable with startup intensity, high responsibility, and a culture of serious dedication to the mission.
