Build Lead - Open Artificial Brain Life Support (ABLS) Project (Remote, Part Time or Full Time)

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

Right to Live Canada is a remote, founder-led Canadian non-profit startup dedicated to realizing the right to live as a practical, supported, executable choice. Founded in response to poverty-driven euthanasia among Canadians with disabilities, the organization is developing innovative service, financial, technological, and institutional solutions that help people remain connected to preferable living futures.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a Build Lead to join the Open Artificial Brain Life Support (Open ABLS) project, an open-source initiative developing a non-clinical artificial brain life support research platform.

Open ABLS begins with a publicly documented bench prototype consisting of pumps, tubing, sensors, software, artificial loads, data logging, alarms, and control systems. Every design revision, test, failure, and improvement is openly published to accelerate engineering development.

The Build Lead is responsible for coordinating the overall development of the project. This role manages the version roadmap, weekly build goals, milestones, release planning, subsystem integration, and blocker resolution to ensure the project continues progressing through repeatable engineering cycles.

Working closely with all technical leads, the Build Lead helps coordinate priorities, track progress, resolve integration challenges, and ensure each development cycle produces measurable improvements.

------ RESPONSIBLITIES
-- Coordinate weekly build objectives and project milestones.
-- Maintain the project roadmap and development schedule.
-- Facilitate communication between engineering teams.
-- Track version progress and coordinate releases.
-- Identify and resolve technical blockers.
-- Support subsystem integration across hardware, software, electronics, and fluid systems.
-- Promote the Open ABLS development philosophy of Build → Test → Fail → Log → Revise → Release → Replicate → Accelerate.
-- Help ensure every revision moves the platform forward.

------ QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
-- Experience managing engineering, robotics, hardware, or technical development projects.
-- Strong project management and organizational skills.
-- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams.
-- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
-- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
-- Ability to prioritize competing technical tasks.
-- Comfortable working remotely with a high level of ownership.

Preferred:
-- Experience leading open-source hardware projects.
-- Startup or prototype development experience.
-- Familiarity with Agile or iterative hardware development.
-- Experience using GitHub for project management.
-- Interest in biomedical engineering and open technology.

------ TIME COMMITMENT
This is a part-time or full-time volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion. The role is best suited to someone who is comfortable with startup intensity, high responsibility, and a culture of serious dedication to the mission.
