Contributing Writer (Volunteer) – Oceanside Arts Magazine

Oceanside Arts Magazine is a free, monthly online publication produced by the Oceanside Community Arts Council. The magazine celebrates contemporary art, creative practice, exhibitions, and arts-related stories from the Oceanside region and beyond. Our goal is to support artists, share thoughtful perspectives, and strengthen connections within the arts community through engaging, accessible writing.

We are seeking a Volunteer Contributing Writer to work remotely and help create interesting, well-written articles for the magazine. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys writing about art, is curious about contemporary artists and creative practice, and values thoughtful, respectful storytelling.

What you’ll do:

- Propose article ideas and submit short article outlines to the editor for acceptance and scheduling
- Select topics that will interest and stimulate local artists and arts supporters
- Focus primarily on contemporary artists, exhibitions, and creative practices
- Conduct interviews with artists (by email, phone, or video call)
- Write clear, engaging articles based on those conversations
- Obtain artist approval of the final article prior to publication
- Secure permission to use images of the artist’s work and provide captions/credits
- Submit articles on time and meet agreed-upon deadlines
- Ensure writing is accurate, well-organized, and written with strong grammar and spelling
- Submit articles in Word document format
- Attend one online editorial meeting per month (approximately)

What we’re looking for:

- Strong writing and communication skills
- Interest in contemporary art and creative communities
- Ability to work independently and remotely
- Comfortable communicating with artists in a professional, friendly manner
- Reliable, organized, and respectful of deadlines
- Previous writing experience is an asset, but not required

What you’ll gain:

- Publication credits in a growing arts magazine
- Opportunities to connect with artists and arts organizations
- Editorial guidance and support
- A chance to contribute meaningfully to the local arts community

Time Commitment:

This is a flexible, volunteer role. Most contributing writers can expect to spend approximately 4–6 hours per month per article, including research, interviewing, writing, and revisions. Writers are typically asked to contribute one article every one to two months, depending on availability. Participation in one short online meeting per month is requested. Scheduling and deadlines are planned in advance to allow for flexibility.
