War Graves Volunteer Inspection & Cleaning - Alberta (Except Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer)

/ yearly
Ongoing, twice a year (in summer months)
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) National Volunteer Program enables community members from across the continent to act as our eyes in their local area. Volunteers will visit their local cemeteries and gather information about the condition of CWGC war graves. CWGC is currently recruiting Alberta-based volunteers outside of the Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer regions.

What are the primary tasks for the role?
- Visit your assigned cemeteries at least twice during the summer months and document the condition of the headstones using a Smartphone App.
- Take photographs of each headstone that you visit.
- If necessary, clean the headstone using our approved methods and perform light clearing and weeding around the gravestone to maintain access.

As part of the role, you will receive training on how to inspect headstones, how to report a grave in need of repair, and how to safely clean headstones where required. You will be assigned specific cemeteries in your local area depending on your location and time commitment.

Please note: For this volunteer position, you will need to have a smartphone with data and access to a vehicle. Be advised that this work is outside in areas where the ground is often uneven and sometimes overgrown.

Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
In North America, CWGC cares for more than 18,000 commemorations on graves and memorials of men and women who died in the World Wars. Each of these names presents an opportunity for you to connect with a personal story of service and sacrifice, and with the legacy of the World Wars in our communities.

By joining CWGC's National Volunteer Program, you will play a vital role in ensuring each headstone is preserved and that the memory of our service personnel endures for generations to come.
