Volunteer Tutor – I-CARE Adult Literacy Program at Douglas College
2-2 hours
/ weekly
Minimum 1 year, weekly sessions
Since 1978, the I-CARE Adult Literacy Program at Douglas College has provided free one-on-one tutoring to adults who speak English fluently or communicate through ASL interpreters but need support with reading and writing. We are currently accepting applications for new volunteer tutors who are compassionate, reliable, patient, and enthusiastic about helping others. Volunteers will work with adult learners to build foundational literacy skills in a respectful and supportive environment. Selected volunteers will complete a free 30-hour training workshop led by Douglas College instructors, along with three practicum sessions in literacy classes. After training, tutors will commit to a weekly two-hour tutoring session and one to two hours of lesson preparation for a minimum of one year. Tutors must be at least 19 years old, hold a high school diploma, and be fluent in English with strong reading, writing, and spelling skills. A criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector check, is required before training begins. Applications are due by November 3, 2025 at 12:00 a.m. Virtual interviews for selected applicants will be held in mid to late November. Training will take place during the first quarter of 2026.
