Volunteer Music Teacher – Keys of Hope Project (Togo)

14625 Rue Sherbrooke East Apt 305, Montreal, QC, H1A5N8 [map]
Ongoing
RefugeRoot Foundation of Canada is seeking a Volunteer Music Teacher to support the Keys of Hope project in Togo and strengthen the work of local music instructors serving vulnerable children.

The Keys of Hope project gives children access to music education, artistic discipline, confidence-building, and a positive learning environment. Through music, RefugeRoot seeks to nurture hope, dignity, creativity, and personal growth among children in vulnerable situations.

Description of the Volunteer Assignment

In collaboration with RefugeRoot and the local team, the volunteer may contribute to:

supporting local teachers in preparing and delivering music lessons;
teaching basic music theory, solfège, and note reading;
helping children learn and practise an instrument;
proposing age-appropriate and level-appropriate learning activities;
contributing to the progressive structuring of the Keys of Hope music program;
sharing teaching methods and musical knowledge with the local team;
helping create an encouraging, respectful, and hope-filled learning environment for children.
Profile Sought

The volunteer should have:

good knowledge of music theory and solfège;
the ability to play at least one of the following instruments: piano, flute, guitar, percussion, violin, or saxophone;
experience in music teaching, child education, or group facilitation;
patience, pedagogy, adaptability, and a strong team spirit;
respect for local culture and sensitivity to the realities of vulnerable children;
a genuine interest in an educational and humanitarian mission.
Language Requirement

Togo is a French-speaking country. The candidate should therefore have at least a basic ability to teach or communicate in French, especially with children during lessons.

The local team may be able to communicate in English, but a minimum knowledge of French is important to support classroom interaction, musical instruction, and integration into the local context.

Volunteer Conditions

This is a voluntary, unpaid assignment. It does not constitute salaried employment or a promise of employment with RefugeRoot Foundation of Canada.

RefugeRoot will only provide:

accommodation during the mission;
local transportation costs directly related to project activities.
All other expenses, including international flights, visa, travel insurance, vaccinations, meals, and personal expenses, remain the responsibility of the volunteer.

A pre-departure training session will be provided by RefugeRoot’s Montréal team to prepare the volunteer for the mission, the local context, pedagogical expectations, cultural realities, and the organization’s intervention principles.

Availability

To ensure continuity for the children and meaningful support for the local team, RefugeRoot is looking for a volunteer available for a minimum period of three months, with a desired start date as soon as possible.

The specific terms of the volunteer assignment, accommodation, local transportation, and responsibilities will be confirmed in a volunteer agreement before departure.
