Operating within the newly expanded space of The Roxy Theatre in Edmonton, the Miller Art Gallery is the proud home of the Peck Visual Arts program, which focuses on championing the best in Canadian contemporary art and elevating the work of Canadian artists. We are creating an artist's home, with a sense of community, where people feel valued, are elevated and have a safe space to develop and grow. We invite audiences to engage and connect through visual art and transform their understanding of the world around them. At Theatre Network, we are interested in creating an environment that is welcoming, respectful, and friendly for our volunteers, staff, artists, and patrons. Our staff really enjoy working with our volunteer corps and we want our volunteers to have a great time here (on shift and off). Here is more information about the role: OVERVIEW Gallery Attendants act as an informal interpretive resource to visitors, they help foster deeper, richer knowledge and understanding of the art and its relationship to our local and national environment. Gallery Attendants are responsible for establishing an inclusive atmosphere by welcoming guests and providing information on the organization and programming, while ensuring the security and safety of artworks. The Gallery Attendant will work regular gallery attendant hours including some weekends and occasional evenings to assist with programs and special events. In addition, Gallery Attendants are responsible for assisting gallery staff with a variety of important administrative tasks. The Gallery Attendant will work regular gallery attendant hours, including some weekends and occasional evenings, to assist with programs and special events. In addition, Gallery Attendants are responsible for assisting gallery staff with a variety of important administrative tasks. They monitor the gallery space to ensure the safety of the art, maintain a clean and tidy space, and process purchases made with our Square point of sale system. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES -Greeting visitors and offering programming information -Answering questions from visitors in person and by telephone -Receiving and forwarding messages to gallery staff -Tracking attendance statistics -Monitoring the exhibition spaces and artwork, and recording any findings as necessary -Communicating any security issues to the staff, and any artwork, equipment, or exhibition space issues to the Chief Curator -Tracking and working with staff to receiving payments for artwork -Maintaining cleanliness of the front entrance and other public areas as required (sweeping, keeping front desk organized, etc.) -Maintaining all in-gallery interpretive materials (postcards, etc.) -Completing required exhibition readings as assigned to develop a deeper understanding of all current exhibitions -Working at occasional special events: opening receptions, public programs, etc. -Monitoring the exhibition space for the purposes of art protection -Upholding and communicating gallery rules and regulations -Engaging the public in conversation about exhibitions and the key messages of the exhibitions -Other duties as required SKILLS REQUIRED -Commitment to attending scheduled shifts consistently -Works well both independently and in a team environment. -Has an understanding or a willingness to understand the Peck Visual Art program and the broader Edmonton art community. -Comfortable engaging with the public and acting as an ambassador for the organization. -Familiarity or willingness to to operate Square POS system -A friendly, polite personality that contributes to an inclusive atmosphere. -Post-secondary education in fine arts, art history, or related subject matter would be considered an asset.
