Teatro Live!

TEATRO HISTORY
Teatro La Quindicina, founded by Stewart Lemoine in 1982 during the inaugural Edmonton Fringe Festival, began by creating comedies for Edmonton audiences. Over the last 40 years, Teatro has presented over 80 new plays by Lemoine and we’ve expanded our repertoire to include new plays, and modern classics by playwrights such as Ira Levin and Noël Coward. Teatro has become known as a cornerstone of literate and stylish comedic theatre with a collaborative grassroots approach where the artists you see on and off the stage are the most dedicated members to Teatro’s ongoing success. Teatro’s ensemble-driven ethos has allowed us to foster local talent and has been instrumental in making Edmonton attractive to Canada's top performers and theatre professionals.
Back in 1994, Teatro became a resident company at Varscona Theatre in the Old Strathcona district, and co-founded The Varscona Theatre Alliance with Shadow Theatre and Die-Nasty. Teatro celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022, and Teatro rebranded as Teatro Live! a riot of fun! Most recently, Teatro welcomed its first General Manager who joined forces with Stewart Lemoine, who remains our resident playwright after four decades of creative leadership.
Key description words for Teatro are COMEDY - in all its shapes sizes and hues, and LANGUAGE. We love words. Words and dialogue. When you come to see Teatro shows expect characters to talk to each other. They may say funny things, heartfelt things, or, well, insanely funny things... but there will be stories told through language. For us, that is theatre. Theatre that's a riot of fun!
TEATRO’S MISSION
Teatro Live! is a theatre company initially founded as a platform for the literate, stylish, and uniquely effervescent works of internationally celebrated playwright, Stewart Lemoine. We also present new comedies by Canadian playwrights that are rooted in language with a strong narrative structure as well as modern classics by playwrights of the eras from which Mr. Lemoine’s original works are inspired. Teatro also fosters the development of new comedies and musicals, encouraging the dexterous use of language with a strong narrative structure.
