Digital Literacy Tutor

Minimum 1.5 hours/week for 3 months
Help adults build confidence using technology for daily life, work, and school! Tutors facilitate 1-on-1 sessions and/or small group classes to help learners develop foundational digital literacy and accomplish their goals. Tutors are welcome to use the PALS office space in downtown Edmonton to meet with learners, or can meet with learners 1-on-1 at a public library.

Qualifications:
• Comfortable using devices and basic programs in daily life (IT experience not required)
• Reliable, flexible, patient, respectful, empathetic, and compassionate
• Caring attitude, a sense of humour, and cultural awareness
• Good command of written and oral English
• Able to make a three-month commitment to establish rapport with learner(s)

Responsibilities as a Digital Literacy Tutor:
• Attend orientation and program training (additional professional development available if interested)
• Communicate with the Program Coordinator on a regular basis regarding the 
learners’ progress, achievements and/or concerns
• Complete reports and outcomes as required
• Adhere to PALS Policies

Responsibilities to Learners:
• Meet with learners on a regular basis, typically once per week for 1.5-2 hours
• Create a welcoming, safe, positive learning environment
• Build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect
• Maintain confidentiality
• Help learners achieve their digital literacy learning goals
• Build on the prior skills of the learners
• Recognize and acknowledge the learners’ progress and achievements
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Tutors will have the opportunity to develop teaching and facilitation skills. Tutors have access to PALS's resource library on various technology topics, but are encouraged to tailor and adapt sessions to best meet the needs of the learners. Tutors are encouraged to develop lesson plans and materials for their learners if it is an area of interest. Additional professional development opportunities in the area of adult foundational learning is also available.
