Garneau-Strathcona Food Security (GSFS) is a community outreach food distribution program that has been providing food to Edmontonians in need for the last 14 years. The program operates on Saturday mornings out of Spirit of Hope United Church (7909 - 82 Ave NW).
Volunteers work together to offer supplementary food to those in the surrounding community and beyond who have limited ability to pay for groceries. In most cases these people are minimum wage earners, new immigrants or recipients of social services that barely cover their rents, and for whom the rising cost of groceries is a severe financial problem. GSFS is a program recommended by the Food Bank to those needing assistance as it is one of the few that operates on the weekend.
A range of foods including fruits, vegetables, dairy products, bread and tinned foods is available from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. every Saturday. From 80 to 90 persons sign in to receive food each week, but the numbers of people with whom they share the food amounts to two or three times as many.
More volunteers are needed to assist with the operation of this vital program, in a variety of volunteer positions. Volunteers may choose to commit to working one shift each month (on Friday or Saturday mornings) or to help out on an occasional basis according to their availability.
