Summer Reading Tent Volunteer

The purpose of the Summer Reading Tent program is to promote a love of reading during the summer months in a fun and engaging way. Over the summer we will be running daily Reading Tents in partnership with community organizations. These tents run primarily on weekdays for 2 to 3 hours and we need volunteers who have a love of reading to help us set-up, read to youth ages 5-12, and run literacy themed activities. Sessions use themes such as the environment, STEM concepts, and social-emotional learning. We ask that volunteers commit to at least two tents over the summer, but dates are very flexible.

United for Literacy volunteers and staff will set up the tents, start with a reading circle, offer a movement break, then move into a book themed activity. This could include word games, writing stories and other fun literacy activities. Afterwards, each child gets to choose a free book to take home with them.
