Volunteer Board Treasurer

6-10 hours / monthly
Two-year renewable term.
Location: Edmonton, Alberta (Remote)

Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society (CAAWLS) is seeking a Volunteer Board Treasurer to join our Board of Directors and help guide our organization’s financial health and sustainability.

The Treasurer serves as an Officer of the Board of Directors and is responsible for overseeing the financial stewardship of CAAWLS. Working closely with the Director of Operations, the Treasurer ensures sound financial management, transparent reporting, and compliance with all relevant legislation and organizational policies. The Treasurer contributes to strategic decision-making and provides leadership in maintaining the organization’s financial integrity, sustainability, and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Oversight and Reporting:
- Review and present accurate, timely financial statements to the Board at regular meetings.
- Ensure the Board has sufficient information to make informed financial decisions.
- Oversee internal controls, accounting procedures, and adherence to approved financial policies.
- Manage regular payment of CAAWLS staff/contractors.
- Monitor cash flow, budget adherence, and financial forecasts in collaboration with the Director of Operations.

Budgeting and Planning:
- Lead the annual budgeting process and present the proposed budget for Board approval.
- Participate in long-term financial planning aligned with CAAWLS’s strategic goals.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support organizational growth and program sustainability.

Compliance and Accountability:
- Ensure all statutory filings, including annual returns and charitable reporting to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), are completed accurately and on time.
- Support the preparation and review of the annual financial audit or review engagement.
- Safeguard the organization’s assets through appropriate financial controls and risk management practices.

Governance and Leadership:
- Serve as Chair of the Finance Committee, coordinating its work and reporting outcomes to the Board.
- Contribute to the overall governance and strategic direction of CAAWLS as an active Board member.
- Mentor and support the Board and staff in understanding and fulfilling their financial responsibilities.
- Uphold CAAWLS’s mission, vision, and values in all decision-making and leadership activities.
Certification or Education Required
- Professional experience in accounting, finance, or financial management 
- CPA designation is required
- Familiarity with non-profit financial operations, reporting standards, and CRA charitable requirements.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret and communicate financial information to Board members with varying levels of financial literacy.
- Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and commitment to fiduciary responsibilities.
