Centre for Family Literacy

The Centre for Family Literacy provides free family and adult literacy programs in Edmonton. We also offer training for literacy professionals in Alberta, workshops in the community, as well as resources and support to parents and those working with families across the province.

Literacy weaves through all aspects of family and community life - through health, employment, education, social welfare, and justice. It is the foundation for all other learning. Family literacy programs focus on developing literacy within the family as a whole.
Family Literacy is not just about reading and writing. It's about developing stronger relationships between parents and their children and getting parents involved in their children's education. It is about building stronger families and healthy communities.

Parents who are involved in family literacy programs at the Centre are also improving their own literacy skills, while supporting the literacy development of their children. All family members benefit!

Children who begin life in a learning environment are more likely to succeed in school and in life and parents are their first teachers. Our programs provide parents with the tools they need to support their children’s early language and literacy development.

We also support adult learners on their literacy journey, building on strengths and meeting the individual needs of the learners.

In partnership with community organizations, our programs support language and literacy development within a family context. We open new windows of opportunity so that Alberta families can achieve what they imagine—improved education, jobs, and health.
