Activity Group Facilitator - Volunteer Recreation Therapist

Do you enjoy connecting with people and engaging in fun activities? Are you friendly, dedicated and outgoing? Do you have experience with people living with dementia or providing recreational programming to seniors? In this role, you would be engaging people living with dementia in meaningful activities at a monthly activities group. We are currently looking for a volunteer available the 4th Monday of each month 1:00-3:30pm. 

Position Purpose:
The Volunteer Activities Group Facilitator (Facilitator) ensures a supportive and engaging atmosphere, where people living with dementia are engaged in meaningful activities that can be modified depending on the participants and how their dementia symptoms are affecting them that day.

In support of the AS ABNT mission, this volunteer position supports people living with dementia and their care partners through the planning and facilitation of an Activities Group with people living with dementia. The Activities Group is offered in conjunction with a care partner support group allowing for care partners to access a support program while knowing their person living with dementia is safe, close by, and engaged in meaningful activities at the same time.  

Tasks / Responsibilities: 
The responsibilities of the Facilitator include, but are not limited to:
•	Plan and get approval of monthly plan of activities that encourages participation and engages participants who may be at different stages or experiencing different symptoms of dementia.
•	Welcome new members to the group, connecting with care partners and AS ABNT staff, for information on participant interests and modifications required.
•	Take attendance and submit to the appropriate AS ABNT staff.
•	Facilitate activities and provide modifications, as needed, to provide support and engage participants throughout an hour and a half group each month.
•	Delegate tasks and provide guidance to Volunteer Program Helpers on engaging with participants or facilitating one-on-one support for activities.
•	Ensure the safety and well-being of participants during activities.
•	Inform AS ABNT staff of client concerns, or clients needing support.
•	Follow guidelines, policies, and procedures for volunteering with AS ABNT. 

Skills:
•	Strong organizational and communication skills
•	Strong interpersonal skills, professional, supportive, and empathetic demeanor 
•	Ability to adapt activities to meet the diverse needs and preferences of participants.
•	Experience with supporting a person living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
•	Experience facilitating a group environment is considered an asset. 
•	Experience planning and leading activities for older adults is considered an asset.

Location/Setting: Edmonton Office

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours per month. Group date and time is prescheduled during regular office hours. Currently looking for volunteers available the 4th Monday of the month 1:00-3:30pm. Planning of activities can be completed remotely.

Additional Details & Skills Required
Training will include basic overview of providing person-centered programming to people living with dementia and reviewing the current dynamics of the activity group. First group will include a staff member present to provide support and observation.
Certification or Education Required
Preferred to have Recreational Therapy education
