When a friend or family member is diagnosed with a mental illness, you may feel overwhelmed, isolated and confused about what happens following the diagnosis.

You may ask
“Who can I talk to about this?” “Where do I find information?” “Where do I find help?”
“What programs and services are available?”

We can help you find answers to these questions. You can drop into our office or phone or email us to talk to our staff and volunteers. We also have a free lending library. We have information about schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, suicide, borderline personality disorder, marijuana and psychosis, estate planning and RDSPs and a variety of other topics. We can direct you to local and on line resources, or to other island services if your loved one lives in another community. We educate and empower our community to help those living with mental illnesses in compassionate way, enabling them to enjoy fully realized lives and putting an end to stigma.

We offer Strengthening Families Together several times per year at no charge. Participants learn about different types of mental illnesses and what it is like to live with a mental illness. Other topics include communication, suicide, substance use, self care, advocacy, causes, medications and coping as a family.

Hearing Voices
We will be offering this empathy building workshop to the public later this year. Participants get a true to life experience of having auditory hallucinations, while attempting to do different tasks. This is done by listening to voices on an mp3 player that were recorded by people who have experienced psychosis. The voices are based on those they have actually heard during their psychosis.
