Laughing Allowed Program Volunteer
Laughing Allowed is a dynamic program designed to promote fun, laughter, and permission to be silly. Through comedy, riddles, and expressive play, the program helps participants with disabilities build language and literacy skills, develop self-confidence, and enjoy a weekly opportunity to "take the stage." Under the leadership of a professional comic and experienced teacher of stand-up comedy, the program continually adapts to ensure every participant has a positive, successful, and enjoyable experience. Purpose of the Volunteer Role: Volunteers support the Laughing Allowed program by helping create a welcoming, playful, and safe environment where participants can take creative risks, practice comedy skills, and build confidence. Volunteers assist the program leader, encourage participant engagement, and contribute to the fun-spirited community that makes Laughing Allowed thrive. Key Responsibilities: • Greet participants and help create an inclusive, friendly, and energetic atmosphere. • Encourage participants to express themselves, practice their jokes, riddles, or performances, and celebrate their successes. • Provide gentle support to participants needing help with language, reading, or expressive communication. • Assist the instructor in setting up the space and tidying up after sessions. • Help during our annual Stand-Up Comedy Show, including welcoming guests, and supporting participants as they prepare to perform. • Serve as a positive role model, promoting humour, creativity, respect, and confidence. Qualifications • Friendly, patient, and enthusiastic about working with people of all abilities. • Comfortable engaging in playful, humorous, and creative activities. • Good interpersonal and communication skills. • Experience with disability support, literacy, performing arts, or comedy is an asset but not required. • Reliability and consistency in attending scheduled sessions. Time Commitment • Weekly sessions on Friday afternoons plus support at our special performances. • An on-going commitment to the project is desired.
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
• Experience supporting literacy, language development, and confidence-building through creative arts. • The joy of helping participants share laughter, humour, and self-expression. • Opportunities to develop a unique communication skill. • The satisfaction of watching people take risks to reach their full potential!
