The Doorway aka The Back Door A Youth Employment Society

The Doorway was initiated in 1988 as a unique response to helping young people wanting to leave street culture for a better quality of life. Today, we still walk alongside young people (17 through 30 years old) and empowering them to make their own decisions and plans to transition. They are the most knowledgeable on what they need; and we are here to listen and provide advice if wanted. We offer a safe, comfortable environment to relax while developing their goals; meals and snacks to nourish their minds; personal hygiene products to feel fresh; and clean clothes for them to feel warm.

Our commitment to young people is for two-years during which they can create 192 steps off the street, 24 "Making Change" reflections, and 24 end of month reports. For this work participants are provided clean, legal money. Our annual success rate has ranged from 60% to 70%, and we continue to strive to make it better.

Today, The Doorway is challenged by the increased demand for our service and the rising costs of our operations. We continue to look for innovative ideas and programs to ensure that young people are provided with every opportunity to succeed!
