It is estimated that roughly 5000 Albertans experience a brain injury every year, but this is a very conservative figure. Data suggests that this number will continue to grow, with traumatic brain injury (TBI) projected to become Canada’s most prevalent neurological condition – exceeding dementia – by 2031. The lives of those with an acquired brain injury, and their families, are very often turned on end as they face employment loss, social isolation, a shortage of suitable housing, financial strain, emotional distress, and a lifetime of dealing with an evolving variety of cognitive, physical, and social impairments.

SABIS exists to support those impacted by TBIs by connecting them to supports and services they need to thrive and live a fulfilling life. We offer case management supports, group supports for clients and their caregivers, and guidance to help people along their journey toward recovery and independence. Without the supports that SABIS provides, individuals and their caregivers may find themselves adrift and searching for support, at risk of losing any gains they have made toward recovery. SABIS provides hope and guidance during a time of (what can feel like) insurmountable challenges.

SABIS began as a grassroots organization 36 years ago, and currently serves over 200 individuals per year. SABIS is funded partially by the Government of Alberta but relies heavily on fundraising and volunteers to keep operations running and to ensure we are open and available to support those who need it.
