The Mustard Seed Downtown is looking for a hands-on, dependable volunteer to support the upkeep of our facility and help create a safe, welcoming, and dignified environment for community members, guests, and staff.

Working alongside our Maintenance team, the Maintenance Support Volunteer will assist with minor repairs, painting, furniture moves, room setups, and general facility upkeep. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical, active projects and likes seeing the immediate impact of their work.

You don't need to be a professional tradesperson - a willingness to learn, a safety-minded approach, and a "handy" attitude are what matter most.

Main Duties:
- Assist with minor interior painting, including preparing surfaces, sanding, taping, touch-ups, and painting trim or common areas.
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes in common areas, offices, and guest spaces, as directed by Team Lead.
- Help set up rooms and events by safely moving tables, chairs, shelving, and other furniture.
- Assist with basic facility upkeep, such as tightening loose fixtures, assembling simple furniture, and supporting minor carpentry or preventative maintenance tasks.
- Assist with urgent issues such as water leaks, power failures, broken appliances and/or equipment.
- Clean, organize, and properly store maintenance tools and equipment after use.
- Follow all organizational safety procedure, including safe ladder use, proper lifting techniques, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work respectfully around staff, guests, and community members while maintaining a welcoming and professional environment.

Requirements:
- Basic familiarity with common hand tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and hammers.
- Ability to follow instructions, work safely, and complete tasks with minimal supervision when appropriate.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and stretch throughout a typical shift.
- Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry items such as furniture and paint cans weighing up to approximately 40 - 50 lbs.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Facilities & Maintenance team.
- Compassion, respect, and understanding when working with diverse and vulnerable populations.

Available Shifts:
Weekdays 8:00am - 12:00pm
Weekdays 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Time Commitment: minimum 1 shift per week.
The schedule is flexible and the team can accommodate 3-hour shifts instead if preferred.

Mandatory Requirements:
- Minimum 18 yrs of age or older
- Adherence to Volunteer Agreement
- Completion of WHMIS Training and Certification
- Completion of POPA Training and Certification

This role takes place throughout an active, public-facing social services facility. Volunteers will move throughout the building and may interact casually with staff, guests, and community members. Because of the nature of our service environment, volunteers may occasionally encounter a medical emergency or verbal altercation. Training will be provided on how to safely step away, report concerns, and defer to professional staff. Also, some tasks may involve exposure to paint fumes, dust, or mechanical equipment. Appropriate ventilation, safety procedures, and PPE will be provided.

Your work will have a direct, practical impact. By helping maintain our spaces, you’ll contribute to a facility that is safe, functional, welcoming, and respectful for the people who use it every day.
Certification or Education Required
