Be a Steady Hand and Friendly Guide - Volunteer with CNIB's Vision Mate Program (Fort McMurray)

Fort McMurray, AB [map]
Ongoing
Are you patient, understanding, and looking for a meaningful way to support someone in your community? Join CNIB’s Vision Mate program and help make daily life more accessible and engaging for someone who is blind or partially sighted and who may also experience challenges with independent task initiation or communication.

We’re currently looking for a calm, compassionate volunteer to support a CNIB participant who:

Is diagnosed as autistic.

Learns best through tactile, hands-on interaction.

Understands much of what’s going on, but has difficulty starting activities or navigating tasks alone.

Would benefit from a consistent, one-on-one connection to build confidence and independence

This person may need help with:

Daily routines or activities at home

Engaging in simple crafts, games, or tactile learning experiences

Exploring interests with gentle support and encouragement

Making connections with the outside world like going on walks, shopping, or trying new experiences

This volunteer role is ideal for someone who:

Is naturally patient, empathetic, and observant

Has an interest in neurodiversity, tactile learning, or adaptive communication

Feels comfortable offering gentle encouragement and structure

Can commit to 2 hours a week at a consistent time

As a Vision Mate, you’ll:

Provide reliable, friendly companionship

Help initiate and guide shared activities

Be a positive presence who helps someone feel safe, seen, and included

You don’t need experience in disability support just a big heart and a willingness to learn. CNIB provides training and ongoing support.
