English Classroom Support - Pebbles in the Sand

The volunteer in this position will discover a great sense of satisfaction knowing they’ve provided meaningful support to enable low literacy students learn English, thus allowing them to better integrate into the class and gain confidence in their English reading, writing and listening skills.

SUMMARY OF POSITION
The volunteer will assist Pebbles in the Sand facilitators in supporting immigrant women learn English at foundational literacy level. The expected time commitment is 3-6 hours a week. Morning (9-12), afternoon (shifts vary between 12:30-4:30pm), or evening (5-8)  are available. Classes are offered at CIWA, in the community, or online.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
•	Follow facilitator’s instructions and assist Pebbles students with their learning tasks  
•	Accept class curriculum 
•	Come with an open mind and willingness to help
•	Provide English conversation practice using facilitator-guided activities
•	Oversee simple written & reading activities as per facilitator’s instruction
•	Follow the Pebbles schedule – class start time, break time and dismissal
•	Keep a record of your volunteer hours and send it to facilitators in a timely manner
•	Actively communicate with program staff on a regular basis through emails and meetings
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
•	Punctuality and adherence to class schedule 
•	Ensure that professional approach is aligned with CIWA values
•	Demonstrate a high level of initiative and enthusiasm
•	Maintain confidentiality at all times
•	Demonstrate patience with students
•	Help in creating a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment

QUALIFICATIONS
•	Access to and knowledge of online platforms such as Zoom
•	Ability to work with in a group setting or one-on-one with students
•	Strong communication and writing skills 
•	Flexible availability and commitment 
•	Experience teaching English as a second language is an asset
•	Competency in another language (Dari, Tigrinya, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, etc) is an asset
