If you possess a passion for working with seniors and contributing to meaningful recreational opportunities, the Academy of Aging invites you to join our volunteer team. We are committed to providing a rewarding volunteer experience that supports the well-being of our residents through engaging and purposeful recreation programs. About the company: The Academy of Aging is a non-profit Canadian Society. The Assisted Living level 4/D residential program is designed to provide a lifestyle experience that preserves independence for those requiring supports for activities of daily living. About the Role As a Recreation Program Volunteer at the Academy of Aging, you will support residents through both individualized and group-based recreation activities that foster engagement, connection, and well-being. Group Programs: Assist recreation staff in facilitating a variety of group activities, including physical games, social events, holiday parties, and interest-based activities such as bingo, gardening, and art. Support may include setup and cleanup, resident assistance and one-on-one support, and facilitating activities. One-to-One Interactions: Volunteers spend time with one or two residents engaging in personalized activities such as puzzles, word games, coloring, reading, or playing cards and board games. Your own hobbies or interests can also be incorporated into sessions, depending on the residents’ preferences, to create meaningful, person-centered experiences. We strive to match residents with volunteers based on shared interests to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for both. Volunteer responsibilities: • Attend scheduled shifts punctually • Prepare and clean up supplies before and after activities • Engage in one-on-one activities with residents, providing supportive guidance and clear instructions as needed • Assist recreation staff in delivering group programs • Help porter and supervise residents during concerts, performances, or special events • Request assistance from staff when additional support is needed for residents
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Have a few hours to spare? Use them to make someone’s entire day. Volunteering in the recreation department of a senior living community is about connection. It’s about laughter over bingo cards, shared stories during art projects, and simply being present. Many of our seniors have rich lives behind them and stories that rarely get told. You can be the person who helps them feel seen! No special skills needed. Your time matters more than you know.
