Board of Directors - Human Resources

Camp Fircom, a Summer camp and retreat facility on Gambier Island in Howe Sound, is located on the traditional and contemporary unceded territory of the Squamish people. Our mission is to create communities of belonging and experiences of growth for children, youth, and families. We are committed to developing right relations and partnerships with Indigenous groups, to developing anti-oppressive systems, and to cultivating respect for the land and natural environment. 

This position will oversee, along with the HR committee, the organization’s human capital, helping ensure it runs in compliance with laws and regulations and that it does so ethically. The position will provide support to the ED in promoting a positive working environment. The applicant ideally will have experience and skills in performance management, not-for-profit HR regulations, employee relations, HR policy development, benefits administration, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). 

In addition to the general responsibilities of a member at large, the Director who brings HR expertise will:

•	Ensure all HR policies and practices comply with rules and regulations. 
•	Provide guidance on staff recruitment, ensuring hiring processes take place.
•	Provide support to the ED in managing staff conflict situations.
•	Oversee the Performance Evaluation of the ED and report to the Board.
•	Identify training opportunities for the organization in general (Board members, ED, staff)
•	Provide guidance on benefits implementation and administration.
•	Stay informed about changes in employment laws and regulations that may impact Fircom’s HR practices.
•	Provide guidance to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within Fircom’s workforce and Board members. 
•	Support the ED in creating a healthy and positive working environment.
•	Lead recruitment of Board directors, as needed.
•	Call for an HR committee meeting at least every two months, ensuring that issues are addressed, and report committee progress at Board meetings.

Additional Details & Skills Required
Engaging as a volunteer Board member for a non-profit requires time commitment, that can vary from 5 to 10 hours per month, depending on the position and the season of the year. The duration of the term is for 2 years, and multiple term commitments are welcome and encouraged.
Certification or Education Required
Competencies:
•	Solid understanding of Human Resources principles, practices, and regulations, including knowledge of recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compensation and benefits, HR policies and procedures, and employment law.
•	Knowledge of Non-Profit Human Resources regulations
•	Awareness of and commitment to the principles and practices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
