VOLUNTEER POSITION OPPORTUNITY

POSITION TITLE: Board of Directors – Volunteer board
REPORTS TO: Board chair
LOCATION: Calgary


Bright Lights for Africa (BLFA) s a non-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta committed to community development, aiming to build thriving and resilient communities where individuals actively participate and contribute to collective growth and prosperity. 
Our mission involves supporting underprivileged families in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC) and Black African Francophone households in Calgary, AB through targeted community development initiatives that uplift and empower them.

Our grassroots programs provide culturally sensitive solutions to individuals facing economic, cultural, and social barriers. Our programs are carefully designed through deep community engagement to ensure our programs meet the specific needs of individuals and households we work with.

To achieve our big dreams, we are looking to build a dedicated and passionate board of
directors who will bring their unique set of skills and expertise to help us deliver on our strategic priorities.

Joining the BLFA board provides a great opportunity for individuals who want to make a
difference to help shape the future of our organization.
To bolster our existing complement of directors, we are specifically looking for individuals with accounting and finance, legal, and fundraising experience and expertise.

BOARD MEMBER RESPONSABILITIES INCLUDE:
Understand, support and champion the vision and mission of BLFA;
Understand the fiduciary and other duties of a not-for-profit policy board and to act in
accordance with those duties, including: Duty of care and Duty of loyalty
Review and monitor board policies and bylaws and be satisfied that they are in compliance
with relevant statutory and regulatory requirements;
Monitor Board policies and bylaws and, where appropriate, recommend changes;
Review and approve relevant policy brought to the Board by committees and senior staff;
Review the structure and composition of the Board and, where appropriate, recommend
and/or approve changes;
Review and approve BLFA strategic plan and monitor its implementation; and
Review BLFA financial statements and be satisfied that such statements present fairly the
results of operations, cash flows, and financial position of BLFA.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Commitment to the work, vision, mission, and values of BLFA ;
Attendance at regularly scheduled Board meetings;
Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of: board governance, policy development,
financial oversight, fundraising, programming, community relations,
advocacy, or any other area that may be determined by the Board to be relevant to the work or operations of BLFA;
Willingness to serve on committees and attendance at meetings of assigned committees;
Attendance at Annual General Meeting or other meetings of membership;
Support of, and participation in, fundraising and other events; and
Commitment in the form of an annual, personal gift to BLFA.
Working knowledge of French is an asset.

Additional Details & Skills Required
Minimum of 3 years professional work experience in areas including but not limited to governance, human resources, finance, Information Technology, International development etc. 
Past or Present experience as an active member of a board (preferred, but not required)
