Glenbow Museum

As a key cultural cornerstone in Calgary for 50 years, Glenbow has surprised and engaged generations of Albertans and visitors to the province with remarkable connections between art, culture and the world around us. Glenbow provides us with a sense of place -- what it means to live in this amazing landscape -- and an appreciation for the legacy of the remarkable people and events that have shaped our community.

Glenbow's collection represents Western Canadian art and culture, both as a repository of important cultural history but also as a living record of contemporary life in this part of the world. Our collecting priorities respond to our community and over the past 50 years, the collection has shifted and adapted to incorporate new voices and perspectives. Our collection includes over a million objects, documents, photographs and artworks, making Glenbow one of the largest museums in western Canada.

In all of our exhibitions, whether they travel to Glenbow from other national or international institutions, or have been created and curated here at home, we are interested in making connections with our collection and exploring human creativity and "the art of making." Just like a work of art, an everyday object can tell a story about how it was made, who used it and the cultural values it represents.

We are passionate about sharing art and culture at Glenbow. Our role is to bring it to life -- to make it vivid, meaningful and relevant. We're at our best when we can activate the art and artifacts within our walls and create opportunities for people to have memorable personal experiences in the museum.

For a town with such a short history, Calgary does a fine job in telling it at the commendable Glenbow Museum that traces the legacy of Calgary and Alberta both pre- and post-oil. Contemporary art exhibitions and stunning artifacts dating back centuries fill its halls and galleries. With an extensive permanent collection and an ever-changing array of traveling exhibitions, there is always something for the history buff, art lover and pop culture fanatic to ponder.
