Operation Eyesight is seeking an enthusiastic and organized volunteer with strong interpersonal skills to work closely with our Communications team. We are a Calgary-based international development organization working to prevent blindness and restore sight in Africa and South Asia. The position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. We’re constantly evolving our communications strategies and are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and innovative volunteer who can be an asset to the Operation Eyesight team. Duties and Responsibilities Media Relations: • Establish contact with various media outlets (television, radio, health journals, blogs and other). This includes contacting media outlets in the countries we work in (India, Nepal, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia). • Develop media contact lists, categorizing and targeting media lists for our various communication needs. • Seek out potential opportunities and partnerships to promote Operation Eyesight events, projects and milestones. • Keep current with what’s trending on social media with assistance from our Social Media team. • Write news releases and create public service announcements. • Create an editorial calendar of events and event lead-up actions, complete with contact details for organizations celebrating events such as World Sight Day, International Women’s Day, World Water Day, Cataract Awareness Month and other international awareness days. • Create a media kit for distribution to both online and offline media outlets. Training will be provided, including in-depth exposure to our brand and to our current communications tools and databases. Work requires two half-days per month in office with remaining work done remotely. Initial training is done in-office. Approximate total commitment is 6 hours per week.
