How does a volunteer centre support volunteers?

We are happy to chat with anyone, anytime to answer your questions, connect you to resources, people in the community, or services that our member organizations provide. In Edmonton, check out: http://ecvo.ca/volunteeredmonton/ and in Calgary email info@propellus.org.

We know that many who volunteer are trying to gain full time employment. Although our workshops are designed for our non-profit members, they are open to the general public as well, so if you’re looking to gain some new skills or brush up, you’re welcome to join us!

How does a volunteer centre not support the community?

We are helpful humans but there are areas that we do not specialize in. There are however numerous agencies who can support you. Click here to find the help that you need.

How do I set up a volunteer account the Volunteer Connector?

Setting up a volunteer account is super quick and makes finding the perfect opportunity even easier. With an account, you can save your favourite searches, get updates on new opportunities that suit you, and follow your favourite organizations. To sign up, enter your email address. You’ll get a link sent to you to set up a password.

If you want to receive alerts for new postings from your favorite organizations, click on the save star! This will direct you to log in (if you’re not already) or sign up for an account. Once you’re in, navigate to "My Dashboard" on the menu bar. Here you will see the organizations that you follow. Every time one of the organizations that you follow posts a new opportunity you will be notified by email.  If you would like to save a search by specific criteria – for example, "suitable for youth, photographer / videographer positions, etc." use the filters on the left hand, once you're finished click "View Results", a star will appear on the search result page. Click on this star, and then navigate back to "My Dashboard" to view your saved searches. Make sure to rename your saved searches so that you can keep track of your opportunities! 

What do I do if I forget my password?

If you’ve forgotten your password, resetting it is simple. Once you’ve entered your email address in the login page, click Go, and then click ‘Forgot your password?’. This will send you an email with a link to reset your password.

How else can I stay up to date with volunteer opportunities?

In Calgary, follow  our Twitter account, @VolunteerCal, connects you to highlighted volunteer opportunities while you tweet. Give it a follow! In Edmonton, check out http://ecvo.ca/volunteeredmonton/.

I’m under 18, how can I volunteer?

Volunteer positions are all different. A lot are appropriate for those under 18, best to chat with the organization if you are unsure! Check out this great organization for youth specific opportunities.

I applied for a position and I haven’t heard anything?

Some positions receive a large number of applicants for positions so they may only contact you if you are a successful applicant. Keep a watch on the organization for different opportunities or explore our Volunteer Connector for more opportunities which interest you.

Can volunteering really help me get a job?

Volunteering can offer you the chance to learn or practice new skills that are desirable in a paid employment setting. Additionally it can offer you the opportunity to gain a great reference.

Members of the public are also invited to our Workshops! If you see one you’re interested in, simply register and purchase tickets on the Eventbrite page.

You may be interested in joining one of our Learning Communities. These gatherings give individuals the chance to engage with peers, share ideas, and network. Plus it’s free to join!

I am a visitor to Canada or on a visa, can I volunteer?

Your ability to volunteer depends on the type of visa that you have and the position you are interested in. Check with Canada Immigration to figure out if your visa will allow you to volunteer in Canada. If you discover that you are able to volunteer in Canada, get in touch with the organizations that interest you.

What if I have a criminal conviction?

Every organization has their own screening practices and requirements. Many organizations will ask for a Police Check as a requirement to volunteer with them. We suggest that you be upfront and transparent about your history. There are positions that are appropriate for someone who has a criminal record or police involvement. For more information visit.

How do I complete court ordered service?

Talk to your court representative, probation officer or lawyer to find out about opportunities that may or may not qualify.
