CPP-D Application Assistance Service (CAS) Volunteer

A minimum 2 year commitment is requested
Are you looking for a volunteer position that will make an impact? Become a volunteer with our CPP-D Application Assistance (CAS) Program! We are looking for empathetic, detail-oriented, and reliable individuals to join our volunteer advocacy team and support folks affected by MS as they apply for the Canadian Pension Plan – Disability benefit. In too many cases, individuals are denied benefits due to providing insufficient information and examples to clearly demonstrate how their MS symptoms impede their ability to work.  
  
As a CAS volunteer, you will help applicants document their MS symptoms and functional limitations in order to the complete the CPP-D application. 

• Help individuals document their MS symptoms and functional limitations  
      - Interview applicants over the phone or via Zoom 
      - Take clear, detailed notes in the applicant’s own voice 
      - Organize and format the information to answer relevant questions from the disability application forms in order to demonstrate how the applicant meets the benefits'
eligibility criteria 
 • Communicate clearly with the program lead, applicants, and fellow volunteers regarding interview appointments and the development of documents for applications 
 • Volunteers often work in pairs to assist a single applicant

Additional Details & Skills Required
Support & Resources
• Mandatory half-day virtual training seminar
• Online training modules to be completed before first training day 
• Training components include: 
- Orientation to the MS Society and MS
- Orientation to CAS and the CPP-D application forms and process
- Observing a mock interview with an applicant 
- Participating in a practice interview with an applicant over the phone 
- Shadowing of an experienced volunteer for the volunteer’s first case
Certification or Education Required
• Detail-oriented with strong verbal and written communication skills 
 • Fluency in French is an asset
 • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion 
 • Calm, patient and enjoys working with people 
 • Empathetic, supportive, and a good listener with a positive attitude 
 • Mature and sensitive: able to speak with applicants about emotional and personal topics 
 • Access to e-mail and ability to use Microsoft Word
 • Ability to work over the phone or via Zoom
