Braille Transcriber

1929 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, ON, L9G 4S5 [map]
15-15 hours / weekly
-
Only 5% of published information is available in formats that people who are blind can read, like braille. Because of this, many people with sight loss can’t read their letters, prescriptions, bills, and other printed materials they receive on a day-to-day basis.

The Volunteer Braille Transcribers produce high-quality Braille documents to support CNIB and its clients. To become a Volunteer Transcriber, the applicant must complete the 8-month Braille Transcription course offered by CNIB (at no cost). This course will require a commitment of 15 hours per week to complete classes and assignments. This intensive course leads to certification in UEB, qualifying a person to transcribe English print materials into contracted braille.

Once the certification is received, an on-going commitment of 15 hours per week volunteering remotely and once a week from the CNIB Foundation’s 1929 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, Ontario office (post-pandemic) this position will support the CNIB’s efforts in the development of Braille materials for clients, volunteers and staff, the management of the Braille examination process for future students and volunteers and to help promote Braille literacy in Canada.

This volunteer position will make a big impact on the lives of Canadians living with vision loss. If you are looking for a role that relies on strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a team environment please send your resume to siradh.abdi@cnib.ca, and please mention Braille Volunteer in the subject line.
