Virtual Mentors for Youth Wanted in Central Alberta

4633 - 49 Street, Red Deer, AB, T4N 1T4 [map]
1-2 hours / weekly
Minimum one year committment
Mentoring virtually is a terrific way to support youth in our communities. No matter where you are - from home, the office, on vacation - you can easily connect with your mentee. The COVID pandemic and life restrictions have created an increased need to help support youth and their mental health.

There are a variety of activities that matches can participate in virtually. Existing mentoring relationships watch the “Panda Cam” from the Calgary Zoo and chat about what they see the animal doing. Other matches complete crafts and participated in different “show and tell” activities. You can tour museums or even connect with NASA or watch a Northern Light show. If a mentee is younger, read them a story and then chat about it afterwards. For those who are brave, watch an online dance class together and try the steps! There are so many things that you two can share virtually, have great conversations and still develop a friendship that can last a lifetime! In addition, we send out resources for ideas that mentors can utilize on virtual visits.

Witnessing the transformation of a child into a confident, concerned, and motivated young person is a remarkable thing. Ushering them into adulthood, seeing them grow into a successful, responsible member of their community and society at large can be extremely impactful and satisfying.
Additional Details & Skills Required
All volunteers participate in our Virtual Agency Orientation and Pre-Match training. The session is about 1.5 hours and we can accommodate your availability.
Being a mentor helps your mentee in so many ways. Mentors help youth boost their confidence and help them build their own self esteem. As a match you will enhance life & social skills, learn new things, make great memories and have fun doing it!
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Serving as role models, mentors lead by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and having respect for family, peers, and community.
Many of our mentors have stated that sometimes they feel they are getting more out of the relationship and how impactful mentoring has been to their lives. Mentoring – has a noticeable influence on a young person’s growth and success.

The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.
