Legal Volunteer

1-6 hours / weekly
Minimum 6 months, or ongoing
Canadian Voices Against Racism (CVAR) is building a database of police brutality and police killings in Canada as a means to advocate for deep structural change. Since a complete database does not currently exist, we believe our database has the potential to become a powerful tool to petition lawmakers to dismantle racist, discriminatory, and oppressive laws and practices that disproportionately target Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities.

We are looking for a volunteer with legal experience to join our team. As we continue to conduct our research into police brutality and police killings, as well as research into unjust and racist policies, we often find ourselves navigating the legal intricacies of such matters.

The legal volunteer would help CVAR by providing legal advice on an ad hoc basis on a variety of topics, such as:
- Canadian legislation and policy
- legal matters surrounding our police brutality and killings databases
- nonprofit law: insurance and liability, community organization by-laws, fundraising for community organizations
